First Grade Match Report - Ainslie v Belconnen

Round 3 AFL Canberra

The Tri-colours travelled to the “the Nest” to play their arch enemy the Belconnen magpies for the first time since leaving the NEAFL competition. The Magpies who were undefeated for all of last season would be a big test for the new look Ainslie. With the small confines of the ground it doesn’t allow for pretty footy but it’s always a really good physical contest.

The game started at a furious pace with both side boring in with Belconnen started well kicking the first 3 goals as they capitalised on some silly mistakes from Ainslie young backline. However in the latter half of the quarter Ainslie kicked 2 quicks goals and there was little that separated the teams at the first break. The second term saw Ainslie winning the contested footy and continually surging the ball forward where forwards M Lawless, Salter and Armstrong were starting to take charge. At the main break Ainslie held a 30 point lead.

In the third quarter Ainslie started well but failed to hit the scoreboard and with this lack of pressure the Magpie surged back into the game kicking 3 quick goals. Then to make matters worse star forwards Salter and Lawless went down with major injuries, and  with all the momentum going the Magpies way they kicked a further 2 goals to end the term 3 points down.

The last quarter promised plenty with Ainslie down in numbers and it was going to take a big effort to beat the fast finishing pies. The leaders stood up in Harris, Wiles, recruit Sienkiewicz and the raging bull Bowles and Ainslie dominated the quarter kicking 8 goals to 1. With culture hero Matt Renet kicking 3 Ainslie surged to a 50 point win. Best players in a great team effort were Sienkiewicz, Wiles, Bowles, Teasdale, Hirst and Ledda with the major goal kickers being Wiles and Renet with 3 a piece.
