Ainslie Defeat Eastlake in NEAFL Round 8
Report from the NEAFL Website
Ainslie blew Eastlake away in the opening quarter as the Tricolours celebrated popular clubman Ian Lawless’ 150th match in style with a 73-point thrashing at Alan Ray Oval.
The Tricolours booted 7.5 to 0.3 in the first quarter to lead by 44 points on their way to a 20.13 (133) to 8.12 (60) victory.
Key forwards Nick Salter (four goals) and Josh Bennett (three) did the damage up forward while young draft prospects Liam Griffiths and Jordan Harper led the midfield charge.
Aaron Bruce and Dean Biermann each kicked two goals for the Demons, who were best served by Jeremy Kirkwood, Shaw Darcy and Nick Fothergill, who continues his strong season in the midfield.
It was the second big loss in a local Canberra derby for the Demons this season, who were beaten by Ainslie by 123 points in Round 2.
They were competitive in the second half but were left to lament a slow start.
The win keeps Ainslie inside the top six ahead of the bye this weekend. Coach Chris Rourke said they were determined to make a good impression in Lawless’ milestone match.
“Obviously it was a big day for the club so I expected us to come out and have a go,” he said.
“We had a good first half and fell away in the second half which was a bit disappointing.
“We almost lost two players in the warm up – Ash Harris copped a knock to the mouth and couldn’t play and Damien Bowles needed stitches but ended up playing.
“That might have slowed us down a bit, and we need to work on a few things, but we were happy with the win.”
Ainslie’s next test will be against a red-hot Sydney University.
