NEAFL Round 3 - Ainslie v Brisbane Lions Reserves
Report from the NEAFL Website
Ainslie maintained fourth placed on the ladder with a gutsy come-from-behind seven point win over Brisbane at Coorparoo.
The Lions led at every change but the Tricolours came storming home, hitting the front at the 25-minute mark of the last to hold on for the 16.6 (102) to 13.17 (95) victory.
Brisbane wasted numerous chances early, kicking 3.7 to 2.0 in the first quarter and 1.6 to 3.2 in the third.
Josh Bennett bagged seven goals, three coming in the last quarter when Ainslie kicked six goals to four to snatch the win.
Bennet was one of his side’s best players, led by Simon Curtis with 23 disposals, six marks and six rebound 50s.
Ash Harris led the possession count with 30, including 10 clearances and eight inside 50s, while Sean Ellis and Clint Mathis were also important.
Brent Staker booted five goals in a best-on-ground performance for the Lions with Ryan Lester (24 disposals and a goal) and Zac O’Brien (35 disposals and five clearances) also finding plenty of the football.
Ainslie coach Chris Rourke said they lacked composure at times but was pleased with the endeavour shown by the playing group as they head into this week’s bye with a 2-1 win-loss record.
“(Brent) Staker caused us a lot of problems up forward and we were lucky they didn’t take all their opportunities,” he said.
“We lacked a bit of composure at times (but) it really does show that if you compete for the whole game your fortunes might turn around.
“It’s nice to have a rest, it took a lot out of us but the boys were really good and it was a terrific win for the club.”
