Aspley brushed aside a gutsy Ainslie outfit to restore third place on the ladder with a 37-point victory in Canberra on Saturday.

The Hornets were in danger of losing a home final if they didn’t secure the four points, but they came from behind at quarter-time to win 16.9 (105) to 10.7 (67).

Ainslie had the jump early when they booted four goals to two in the opening quarter but the Hornets turned things around in the second with a 5.4 to 1.2 return swinging the momentum in their favour.

The result was effectively sealed in the third when Aspley piled on a further six goals to one for a match-winning 44-point lead.

Eddie Sansbury and Henry Joyce finished with four goals each as the Hornets were led by Matt Payne in another best-on-ground performance.

Nicholas Heyne, Sean Ellis (three goals) and Simon Curtis battled hard for the injury-hit Tricolours, who finish off their season against Gold Coast at home next week.
